Gardeners Alperton is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a manner that safeguards the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risks, training our people and continuously improving our safe working practices.

Policy Aims and Responsibilities

Our aim is to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health arising from our gardening operations. We will identify and control hazards, promote a culture of safety and ensure that health and safety considerations are central to the way we plan and deliver our services.

Overall responsibility for health and safety within Gardeners Alperton rests with the company management, who will provide the resources and leadership necessary to implement this policy. Supervisors are responsible for day-to-day safety management on site, including briefings and checks before work starts. All employees and subcontractors have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.

Risk Assessment and Safe Work Planning

Before starting work at any garden, outdoor space or premises, we will assess the potential risks associated with the tasks to be carried out. Our risk assessments will consider factors such as the condition of the site, slopes and uneven ground, access and egress routes, presence of members of the public, weather conditions, and any specific client requirements.

We will put appropriate control measures in place, including the selection of suitable tools and equipment, use of personal protective equipment and safe systems of work. Where necessary, method statements will be prepared and communicated to all workers involved. Work will not proceed if serious and uncontrolled risks are identified.

Use of Tools, Machinery and Equipment

Gardeners Alperton will ensure that all gardening tools, machinery and powered equipment are fit for purpose, properly maintained and used only by trained and competent personnel. Regular inspections will be carried out and defective items will be taken out of service immediately until repaired or replaced.

Chemicals, Pesticides and Environmental Care

Where gardening work involves the use of chemicals, fertilisers or plant protection products, we will follow all relevant safety data instructions and good horticultural practice. Only trained and authorised personnel may handle and apply such substances.

We will store and label chemicals securely, minimise quantities kept on site, and avoid contamination of soil, watercourses, neighbouring properties and wildlife habitats. Empty containers and waste products will be disposed of safely and responsibly.

Public and Client Safety

Our work often takes place in areas used by clients, residents, visitors and the general public. Gardeners Alperton will take reasonable steps to protect others from harm arising from our activities. This includes using barriers or warning signs where necessary, keeping access routes clear and planning noisy or potentially hazardous tasks to minimise disruption.

We will maintain tidy work areas, promptly remove trimmings and waste, and secure tools and equipment when not in use. Vehicles will be parked considerately and loaded safely to avoid risks to pedestrians and other road users.

Training, Information and Supervision

Gardeners Alperton will provide appropriate health and safety training to all employees, tailored to their roles and responsibilities. This may include induction training, tool and machinery operation, manual handling, use of chemicals, first aid awareness and emergency procedures.
